A purple silk velvet tent-coat, cut very fully so as to appear overwhelming. Balenciaga Paris labelled and numbered 40.157. Soft Lyon velvet, with deep shawl collar forming a short cape at the rear, lined in black faille. Model 145 in Balenciaga's Autumn Winter 1951 collection. The coat was photographed by Henry Clarke and appeared in American Vogue in October 1951 (p.128) and in Frnech Vogue in October 1951 (p.90), worn over a black taffeta dinner dress with long black gloves. It was also photographed by Louise Dahl Wolfe.
