Summary

Public: Pair of Grecian sphinxes, black basalt stoneware, with ornate saddles and rectangular plinths. One on display. Private: Rectangular plinth with instep round top edge. Female Grecian sphinx with thick set body of lion, head and breasts of woman, lying upright on plinth with head raised, paws facing forward. Ornate moulded saddle on sphinx's back, with lambrequin edging and scrolling foliage reaching forward over shoulders to become breastplate. Female head has long hair tied up at back and wears tiara type headdress.
