Summary

Jacket; Single breasted - fronts cut in one piece with shaping by means of two darts from hip pockets. These have rounded flaps, bound edge, and a lining of stout dark brown cotton twill. Pocket at left breast has 3/4 " self binding and is also lined in cotton twill. Three 1" flat composition "horn" buttons fasten by hand stitched button holes; Button hole also at lapel. Turn down collar is backed self fabric and reinforced at back of neck with six rows stitching. Back is cut in two pieces. There are no slits or top stitching. Sleeves cut in two pieces have slit, but 3 mock button holes with buttons. Interior; Shoulders and upper body are padded. Jacket is fully lined, body lined with brown bombazine, sleeves lined in cream/ brown striped cotton twill. Interior breast pockets bound at each side. Fabric loop at neck. Label: HARRIS TWEED Trade Mark. The Guarantee of highest quality "Homespun and handwoven by the crofters of Harris and Lewis in their own cottages." Waistcoat; Single-breasted, collarless with v-neck. Fronts made in one piece with dart from waist upwards. Fronts terminate in sharp points. Fastens with five small composition "horn" flat buttons through hand-stitched buttonholes. Two pieces of brown bombazine. Interior; Fronts, neck and front hem faced self fabric. Fully lined cream cotton twill shaped in brown and fawn. Interior pocket at left breast. "Plus fours"; 1 1/2" waistband supports five self-fabric belt loops. Woven composition buttons sewn on also. Front fly fastens with five brown composition buttons and hand stitched button holes which have been mended. "V" shaped flap pockets at each side seam. Fabric is brought into two pleats at waistband at front. Trouser back is plain and close fitting. Trouser legs are very long, terminate in 2 1/4" self fabric. Cuffs which fasten by means of a metal buckle, fullness is brought into cuff by four small darts. Trouser legs pieced at crotch. Interior; Waistband lined cream cotton twill with yellowed brown stripes. Pockets all stout cream cotton. Half lining of brown bombazine at trouser back; cuffs lined brown cotton twill. Flat cap - circular top, 3" deep sides - reinforced at back with four rows of stitching. At front narrow self fabric band held down by small flat composition "horn" buttons is obscured by press stud holds crown down to brim. Interior; lined gold cotton satin twill with quilted pattern. Stamped trade mark of Harris tweed - "Hand made", "Unequalled". Stockings; Cream, ginger and brown tartan. Hand knitted in stout wool stocking stitch, with K2 P2 well machine stitched on. Knee-length. Plain ginger sole, machine stitched on. All much darned. woven labels in jacket and cap : "Harris Tweed, Trade Mark, the Guarantee of highest quality. Homespun and handwoven by the crofters of Harris and Lewis in their own cottages"
