Worcester Porcelain Factory 1751


Public: Part tea service, comprising teapot, milk jug, tea caddy, six tea cups, four saucers, one coffee cup and one two-handled chocolate cup and saucer. Made of soft paste porcelain, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, and iron red, green, blue and turquoise overglaze enamels and gilt with Japanese 'Imari' pattern. Teapot only on display. Private: Globular teapot on heavy footring, with cylindrical neck and heavy ribbed loop handle. Main body divided into four wide vertical panels by four narrow underglaze blue panels, one running through handle, one through spout, one each side. Panels over-painted with gilt, circular reserve in white, half way down, filled with flowers in red, green and gilt. White panels filled with large stylised chrysanthemums in red and gilt, and prunus stems in blue, with green leaves and background. Horizontal band of flowers reserved on underglaze blue ground with gilt edges round bottom of body, white handle and spout picked out in red scroll motifs. Domed lid with flat sloping edge, decorated with similar panel design, underglaze blue and gilt reserved floral border at centre round moulded flower finial painted in red and green. Pear shaped lidded milk jug with footring, plain loop handle and sparrow's beak lip. Decorated with same alternating underglaze blue and white floral panels, some details in turquoise enamel, handle picked out in red motif. Gilt rim to lip. Domed lid with same pattern and same flower finial. Six wide teacups, each with straight sides, curved base, footring and ear shaped loop handle. Same pattern of blue and white panels with chrysanthemums and prunus in enamels and gilt. Single flower and leaves in well of cup, gilt edging to rim and gilt motif on back of handle. Four deep saucers, each with steep sloping sides and same pattern radiating out from central circular panel, white with sprigs of chrysanthemums in red, blue, green and gilt. Single coffee cup, taller and narrower than teacup with ribbed loop handle and same pattern, plain white well. Two handled chocolate cup of fluted ogee shape with undulating rim and indented horizontal band round middle, plain body beneath. Ear shaped handles picked out in gilt, thick footring. Same pattern on exterior with clearer floral reserved blue and gilt border round bottom. Sprig of flowers in red, green and gilt in well. Deep bowl-like saucer of matching ogee shape. Decorated on upper surface with same pattern, clearer floral blue and gilt border round central circular panel, white filled with flower sprigs. Tall globular tea canister, tall narrow plain white neck, plain white splayed foot. Body decorated with same pattern of alternating blue and white panels, and floral blue and gilt border round bottom. High domed lid with same pattern, circular reserves in blue panels filled with red, gilt and white daisy motif. Central flower finial with stem and leaves reaching down side, painted in red and green. pattern : Rich Queen's (see notes)
