Jobs and Volunteering

Job Opportunities

As part of Manchester City Council, all vacancies at the gallery are posted on the councils central jobs website. Our café and venue hire business is operated by Manchester Art Gallery Trading Company Limited. Any vacancies within the company are advertised here.

People are vital to the life of our galleries.

Our projects and activities often extend further than we could possibly imagine, due to the energy, ideas, enthusiasm and passion of staff and volunteers.

Across our two venues, Manchester Art Gallery and Platt Hall, we work with over 70 volunteers. Our volunteers deliver tours, facilitate discussion sessions, support artists to deliver our workshop programme and help out behind the scenes through research, cataloguing and conservation work.

Volunteer opportunities

We work with over 70 volunteers and we aim to provide volunteer opportunities that are interesting, engaging and rewarding.

Volunteering at Manchester Art Gallery can help you to develop skills, feel involved in the life of the gallery and meet new people.

Our core volunteer roles

Delivering learning sessions

Highlights tours, Stories we Share, Art Bites and Philosophy Café discussion sessions are all led by volunteers who enjoy chatting to visitors.

Supporting learning sessions

Get creative alongside artists and other freelancers to support family and adult making sessions during the holidays and weekends. This role is great for people interested in being creative with other people.

The Lion’s Den

Volunteer in the The Lion’s Den to support family drop in visitors.

Behind the scenes

A small number of volunteers support us behind the scenes including helping us to catalogue and research art works, documenting our archive material and helping to prepare for exhibitions and displays.

Get involved

You don’t need to know lots about art or art history to become a volunteer at Manchester Art Gallery, we just ask for a commitment to the role, an open mind and a willingness to get involved. We offer opportunities to adults over the age of 18 who live, work or study in the Greater Manchester area.
