Job Opportunity- Manchester Together Archive Officer
Manchester Art Gallery is looking for a professionally qualified archivist to catalogue the Manchester Together Archive – a collection made up of the thousands of tributes left across the city centre at spontaneous memorials by members of the public following the Manchester Arena attack on 22 May 2017.
The collection holds great cultural and emotional significance to the people of Manchester and those closely affected by the attack, as well as the many people from across the UK and the world. The items in the collection demonstrate a huge range of creative expression, embodying the outpouring of love, solidarity and grief that followed the attack. The majority of items in the archive are paper based, including cards, letters, written notes, photographs, drawings, paintings and poems. Additionally, the archive includes personal mementos, candles, soft toys, balloons, artworks, decorative objects, artificial and dried flowers, textiles and other three-dimensional objects.
The cataloguing project is funded by the National Archives ‘Archives Revealed’ Programme and is part of a wider programme delivered in partnership between Manchester Art Gallery the University of Manchester and Archives+
If you are an archivist who takes a person-centred approach to working with non-traditional material, we’d love to hear from you. Working as part of the gallery’s Collection Management Team, you will be fully supported in your role by a steering group from the Partnership who are experienced in the sensitives and challenges with working with this type of material.
