Opening hours

We are open Monday-Sunday 10am-5pm, including bank holiday Mondays. Late night opening on Thursday until 9pm.
We are closed Good Friday, 25 March 2016.

We try to keep our records of changes to works on display up to date. However, if you are planning to visit to see a specific work, please contact us first to check that it is on display.

How to get here

By Metrolink tram

St Peter’s Square or Market Street stations are the nearest Metrolink stations. Both are on the Altrincham and Eccles lines.

By bus

While St. Peter’s Square is being redeveloped, nearest bus stops are in Piccadilly Gardens or on Princess Street. A map of nearest bus stops can be found here.

By train

To Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road or Manchester Victoria stations. Take the Metrolink from Victoria or Piccadilly (Altrincham or Eccles direction) to Mosley Street or St Peter’s Square.

By car

Manchester is ringed by the M60, linking to the UK’s extensive motorway network. Follow signs to the city centre. Car parking is available at the NCP car parks on Chepstow Street, Faulkner Street or Sackville Street. All are within five minutes of the gallery. The nearest disabled parking is on Nicholas Street or Princess Street, approximately 50m from the main entrance.

By coach

The coach drop off point is at the groups entrance on Princess Street.

Information desk

Our main information desk is in the central atrium. Pick up floor plans, leaflets, free family backpacks and other information from here.

Tours and trails

With three floors, 21 rooms and over 2,000 items on display spanning over six centuries you may want some guidance on where to start. We offer a range of tours and events to help you discover more about our collections, including free highlights tours every weekend. Group visits

We offer a range of tours and support for groups, along with refreshments. Full details and booking information about all our tours.

Resources for families

Free family backpacks are available for family groups with children aged between seven and 12. Find out more about visiting with your family here.

Education visits

Our formal learning team develops and manages an extensive education programme for nurseries, schools, colleges and universities.


We are committed to allowing photography for personal and social media use. We only ask that visitors don’t take a photograph if it is a lenders explicit wish. There will be clear signs indicating this whenever that is the case.
