Pot a Tabac, Fond Bleu

Henri Hayden 1883 - 1970

Summary

An abstract still life with three objects depicted free-floating against a blue background. There is a black pipe in the lower foreground, with a cloud of orange extending beneath it. Above and to the left is a glass pot with black matches emerging from the opening. The pot is white and translucent with some horizontal markings and orange paint across the upper section. Lastly there is a violet perfume bottle with an orange flower motif and decorative geometric trim to the centre right. There is no strong attempt to represent traditional three-dimentionality; rather we are shown a variety of views at once, especially with the pipe. In this sense the works seem to refer to cubism. This work is also post-impressionistic showing the strong influence of Cezanne.
