The Hop Exchange after the Fire

Stanley Anderson 1884 - 1966

Summary

A street scene with tall buildings to right, and lower ones on the left. Signs attached to the facades of the buildings on the right advertise shops and a space for sale. Telegraph wires cross between the buildings. A woman can be seen at a window of the building on the right, and a sheet can be seen hanging from another window higher up. A carved bird is positioned above the pediment of an archway in the building on the right. In the right foreground is a horse and cart with a barrel load covered with cloth. A figure is sitting at the front of the cart holding the reins, while another leans against the barrels on the cart. The road between the buildings is congested with wagons and carts mostly traveling down the road away from the viewer. There are several figures in the foreground transporting sacks. In the middle distance is a rail bridge, and steam can be seen from the steam engine crossing it.
