Gypsies

Sybil Andrews 1898 - 1992

Summary

This rural scene is depicted in very rich colours - blue, navy, red, purple, orange, yellow and green - which gives a sense of the fertility and richness of the land. It shows four figures walking one behind the other through a field that curves into the distance from the lower left hand corner to the right middle ground. Each figure is wearing similar clothes - trousers, shirt, sturdy shoes and a hat - and they are all carrying a bundle of sticks on their backs. They appear to be trekking into the distance towards a group of trees that can be seen on the horizon. The curve of the field in the lower right hand corner is balanced out through the curve of blue in the top right hand corner so that the composition has a sense of balance and symmetry. Labour was a common theme of Andrews' subjects.
