Victorian Mantlepiece

Edwin La Dell 1914 - 1970

Summary

In this interior scene the mantelpiece acts as the focal point of the composition due to its large size and central position. On top of the mantelpiece which is a deep green, there is a mirror with vases of flowers either side. The greenery of the flower arrangements echoes the green of the mantelpiece and it is also echoed in the green of the table shown in the bottom left hand corner. The chair which has been pulled out from the table also has a cushion with green detailing upon it. The rest of the composition is largely created through grey tones and details, such as the shelves on the wall in the top right hand corner, are implied through sketchy lines. The whole composition has a loose, sketchy feel, particularly in the application of colour and in the vases of flowers where the forms are somewhat abstracted.
