Canal, Middleburg

Edith Lawrence 1890 - 1973

Summary

The geometric style of this scene is one of its most striking features and makes it appear pattern like. The buildings in the distance are an array of different geometric shapes and colours from blue, green, orange, yellow and red. These are then reflected in the canal which fills the lower half of the scene although many of the vertical lines are no longer straight to give a sense of the fluidity of the water. In the middle ground of the scene there is a boat on the canal moving horizontally across the scene. Whilst the scene is very busy and there is a lot of detail the symmetry created through the reflections in the canal draws it all together.
