The Storm

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

In this print it is noticeable that the majority of the space in the composition is taken up by the sky which fills about three-quarters of the space. It is rendered through quite fine but densely packed lines in a variety of directions and this has the effect of making the sky seem quite heavy, dark and cloudy. In the lower quarter of the composition a rural landscape is depicted with a road that moves from the lower left hand corner to the right middle distance. On the road, in the centre of the composition, are two figures walking into the distance with their backs to the viewer. There are also three trees, the largest one to the left of the road in the middle ground, and the other two side by side to the right of the road. These trees are all seen in silhouette and are quite tall and narrow which allows them to break into the expanse of the sky.
