Margaret's Ghost

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

In this interior scene much of the details of the room are unclear due to the darkness of the scene, although it is just about possible to detect a carved post in the bottom left corner and what appears to be a pile of material in the bottom right corner. What is striking therefore is the scene in the middle ground of the composition which is highlighted by the shaft of light that falls from the upper left corner to the centre of the foreground. There is a woman lying awake in bed peering over her shoulder at the figure of a woman floating above the floor at the end of the bed. The ghost-like nature of this figure is indicated through the way that she is given no definite outline or form, instead her figure is allowed to merge into the darkness of her surroundings. This print is an illistration to the ballad May Margaret/May Margaret Returns.
