Pieta
Summary
The rendering of the Pieta in this print is rather stylised as the figures are depicted in an elongated and rather angular manner. Jesus' naked body stretches horizontally across the scene, with his feet touching the left hand side of the frame and his upper torso propped up by a woman who is seated just off centre right. Whilst the woman cradling his head is facing towards the viewer, with her legs out-stretched to the right, the second woman is seen from behind with Jesus' legs resting over her own legs. Both women are wearing the same black gowns which act as a contrast to Jesus' naked body, which is left mainly white due to the reduced linework used to indicate his emancipated body, and both women have halos. There are no other details in the scene apart from the grass on which the figures rest which allows for the figures and emotionally charged scene to be the focus.
