Nightmare
Summary
Although this print is very small in size it is boldly rendered using thick linework and strong contrasts between light and dark. The scene shows what appears to be a rather sublime landscape as the cloudy sky and large mountains serve to emphasise how small the figure of the man in the bottom left corner is. In the lower right there is a steep path ascending to the upper right with sharp falls either side. In the middle of the composition there is dense shadow leading upwards towards the mountains in the distance and it is against this that the figure is highlighted. Although the sky has a large column of clouds in the centre it is largely cast in shadow and seems stormy.
