May Margaret's Return
Summary
The focal point of this print is the distressed woman depicted in the centre of the scene with both hands raised to cover her face. She is shown in profile, facing to the right, wearing a simple dress and with bare feet walking through a rural landscape. She appears to be walking down a grassy hill which is scattered with a few flowers, and the sky follows this slight incline to the left through the slope of the linework. Directly behind the woman there is no linework apart from a few birds in the distance and this serves to emphasise the figure of the woman as well as suggesting that the light is falling from the right. The title comes from a traditional ballad, possibly 'Hynd Etin'; a story of love, loss and reunion.
