The Wood

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

The denseness of the wood is most striking in this print, no sky is visible and the top half of the print is taken up by the foliage of the trees. In the foreground on the left hand side there is a single large tree trunk which casts a shadow across the foreground to the right and into the centre of the composition. The shadow of the tree leads the eye to the figure of a man just visible in the middle ground, slightly right of the centre, who, supported by a walking stick, is heading into the dense woods. Due to the trees and foliage the whole scene appears quite dark and shadowy, particularly between the tree trunks in the middle ground where the man is walking.
