The Cobbled Yard

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

In the foreground of the scene, sitting on a wooden stool in a cobbled yard is a young woman holding a small child in her lap. The woman is seen in profile facing to the right wearing a full length dress with her hair tied back into a bun. All of her attention appears to be directed towards the child as her face is cast into shadow as she looks down at the child. The child, who is sat supported by the woman's arms, is also looking down towards its hands where it seems to be playing with something. Surrounding the cobbled yard are a series of houses running along the left hand side and across the composition in the middle ground. Whilst the buildings to the left are in shadow the other houses are brightly lit as the light falls upon them and a woman can be seen framed in the doorway in the middle ground. Further behind these buildings a turreted tower can be seen to the left, again strongly lit and framed by the large cloud that fills the left hand side of the sky.
