The Poacher (Bookplate for Winifred Cox)

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

The scene shows a rural landscape at night with a full moon in the top right hand corner. On either side of the scene there are large trees; on the left hand side the trees seem denser with a border of bushes in front of them as they are seen receding into the distance where as on the right hand side in the foreground there are fewer trees but they are made to look bigger as they have a large amount of moss growing up their trunks. None of the trees have leaves on them which means that where the moon throws light across to the right the branches are highlighted. The trees to the right cast a shadow across the foreground which means that the small figure of a man with a dog in the lower right corner is barely distinguishable. Between the two trees, in the middle ground, there is an open grassy area which is highlighted by the light of the moon.
