Sheep by a River
Summary
Running through the centre of the rural landscape depicted is a river which divides the scene in two compositionally. Lining both sides of the river are trees whose leaves have fallen; there are two trees on the bank closest to the viewer and five on the opposite bank whose reflections can be seen in the water. In the distance behind the river the landscape is very flat only interspersed by a few trees, bushes and haystacks. In the foreground, in front of the river, there are six sheep grazing by the riverbank. They cast long shadows in front of them towards the bottom left hand corner which suggests that the light is falling from the top right.
