Summary

The action of this scene is created by the central figures who are all reaching for the ball in the air whilst the outer figures concentrate on the play from a slight distance. All of the figures are men and there appears to be two teams distinguished by their different clothing; one team all wear black shorts with red shirts and socks and they have black hair whilst the other team where grey shirts with darker grey shorts and socks and they all have red hair. There is one figure in the foreground to the right who has a striped grey and red shirt which makes him different from the other men. The background of the scene is very plain with a grey strip at the bottom to indicate the ground, but this simplicity acts as a balance for the amount of men and the detail created through their interweaving bodies as they reach for the ball. The composition has a triangular format as the pinnacle of the drama is located in the top centre where the ball is positioned as the highest point.
