Evocation of Kundry

Summary

A man with an open book is seated to the right. He is wearing a turban and is pointing toward the bottom right corner with his right hand. He is looking to the right where a naked woman is standing. The woman has her arms over her head. Her right arm covers her eyes. There are deep shadows in the background, with a shaft of light behind the seated man.

Evocation of Kundry 1897 Henri Fsntin-Latour 1836-1904 Lithograph This print was inspired by a scene in Wagner's Parsifal, with which Fantin-Latour was fascinated. The velvetiness of lithography lends a dreamy quality to the scene; scratches in the wax highlight the form of Kundry. A soft-grained crayon was used in the lighter areas, with some wax also wiped from the stone. Purchased 1911.71
