Gotterdaemmerung - Siegfried and the Daughters of the Rhine

Gotterdaemmerung - Siegfried and the Daughters of the Rhine

Summary

On the left hand side walking away into the distance and standing out against the bright but cloudy sky is a man carrying a shield and spear. The wind blows against him, as is shown by his windswept clothes, as he raises his head in order to blow the horn he carries in his left hand. He has his back to the viewer but also to the three female figures in the foreground. The women are all nude and their pale skin stands out against the shadows of the landscape. One of the women, who is positioned just right of centre standing in shallow water, twists her body and leans against a rock so that she can watch the man as he walks away, her left arm raised in a beckoning gesture. The other two women are also in the water but their attention seems to be directed at the other woman who they both look at. One of the women is to the right of the central figure and looks up at her, whilst the other is reclining in the foreground, her back to the viewer, but again looking towards the other two women.
