Figure

Pablo Picasso 1881 - 1973

Summary

The cubist style used in this vibrant print means that the subject is not immediately apparent; instead what is most striking is the crisp palette of seven colours and the clear, bold, black outlines that delineate the different forms and shapes. Many of the different forms are geometric, with both angular and curved forms used to represent a female figure that is positioned standing in the centre of the composition. In her figure different two-dimensional forms are used to suggest the physicality of her body and the clothes she wears. An interior setting is then suggested through the two-dimensional but quite ornate table in the bottom left and the rectangular picture frame in the top left hand corner.
