Window in Toledo
Duncan Grant 21 Jan 1885 - 8 May 1978
Summary
Two female figures standing on a balcony leaning across a rail. They both look downwards, and the figure on the left is slightly turned to the right with her hand to her chin. Both have their hair tied back and the woman on the left wears a short skirt. The woman on the right has her arms folded and shoulders hunched. The lithograph is printed in blocks of yellow and pale blue, with black printed on top. The style is loose and sketchy. This print is from a set of eight commissioned lithographs from the series 'Eight Lithographs' published by the Millers Press in 1945. The Millers Press in Lewes, East Sussex, was set up in 1945 by two sisters, the artist Caroline Lucus and Frances Byng-Stamper, with the purpose of revitalising the art of lithography. 'Eight Lithographs' was their first portfolio and was published in an edition of 250. The lithograph 'Partridge and Grouse', also by Duncan Grant (1945.29) is also from the portfolio 'Eight Lithographs'. Each artist contributed two lithographs, one in colour and one in black and white. The other artists were Vanessa Bell, Caroline Lucus and Hercules du Plessis.
