Study of Six Women

Tuscan School

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing from the Tuscan School. The drawing shows a full length presentation of six woman, standing in a group and facing towards the right. They are loosely arranged in two groups of three with the figure positioned most leftwards of each group standing further forwards than the others. The woman at the front of the group on the right and the one in the middle of the group on the left are wearing veils while all the other women have wavy hair and headbands. They are all wearing cloaks or heavy drapery. The two women in the foreground have their hands crossed over their chests, the woman in the middle of the left-hand group has her hands raised in prayer and the woman at the back of this group has her hands folded in front of her and her head bowed. The hands of the remaining two women are obscured by drapery or another figure. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 1 TUSCAN SCHOOL (About 1400) STUDY OF SIX WOMEN British Museum, 1860.6.16.52. (From the Richardson, jun., Collection.) Pen and bistre. 15 x 17.1 cm. (5 7/8 x 6 3/4 in.) This study, which represents six women (two of them veiled) looking on at some sacred ceremony, lies among the unattributed Florentine drawings in the British Museum. It has, however, so little that is characteristic, that it is difficult to decide between a Florentine and a Sienese attribution. It is hoped that its reproduction here may lead to its being satisfactorily attributed. On the verso is the lower part of a draped figure, seated to front, by the same hand."
