An Architectural Medley

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The drawing shows a rural wooded scene with various architectural constructs. There is a circular design in the centre with a scene with figures carved onto it, and to the left of this is a large tree. On top of the design to the right stands a man with a spear facing towards the right, and a child crawling and facing towards the left. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 15 GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI (b. 1720; d. 1778) A STUDY OF ARCHITECTURE WITH TWO ROUND ARCHES AND FLIGHTS OF STEPS British Museum, 1908-6-16-36. From the Gott Collection. Black chalk, pen and bistre and bistre wash. 25.3 x 18.4 cm. (10 x 7 1/4 in.). A spirited and imaginative drawing, made up of a tomb, vases, slabs, two human figures and trees. It is probably a study for one of the engraved 'grotesques', which appeared in his Opere varie di Architectura, Prospettiva, Groteschi, Antichità, Rome, 1750, though the actual design is not closely followed in any of the plates.
