Summary

A waterside scene with a large boathouse on the bank to the centre midground. Behind and above the boathouse are more buildings. There is a masted ship with a partly lowered sail, with a group of smaller boats, to the right of the boathouse. Two men are standing and a woman is seated at the left foreground, beside a rowing boat. There are mountains in the background. Born in Glasgow, Leitch was a lawyer's apprentice before he started to paint in the early 1820s. He moved to London in about 1828. A patron, the stockbroker Mr Anderden, funded Leitch's tour of Europe including Italy in 1833. When he returned in 1837, he set up a successful drawing practice. His pupils included Queen Victoria and other members of the royal family.
