Summary

An oval box with a plain brass mount and hinged lid with steel mirror inside. Enamel on metal and transfer-printed on the lid in black on a white ground with the image of Manchester Infirmary on Piccadilly; inscribed above and below the image is 'A PRESENT FROM MANCHESTER / INFIRMARY'. The image shows as a central, tall building with a triangular pediment and surmounted by a weather vane; a line of smoke from a chimney; a long building to the left and various buildings to the right, with open ground and a fence in the foreground. The body of the box is light blue.

Display Label

Patch box about 1790-1815 Staffordshire Enamelled metal with transfer print Harold Raby, a bank manager from Withington, Manchester, bequeathed his entire collection of 456 enamel boxes to the gallery. He wanted them to be displayed together, if at all possible. 1958.262
