Summary
"Gagra". Red, black and white cotton, decorated with applique, embroidery and mirror work. Constructed from horizontal strips seamed together, alternate red and black. Wide at the waist, decreasing in width towards hem. Very full, gathered into a wide, unstiffened waist band of same "patchwork" construction. Waistband and skirt lined with a motley collection of strips of printed and plain fabric, including cotton poly-cotton, rayon and rayon crepe. Hand stitched. Pattern; a complex series of horizontal stripes, some formed from narrow appliqued strips of fabric, some from lines of simple linear embroidery stitches, interspersed with rectangular mirror pieces, and brightly coloured silk and cotton tasselled "tufts". Stitchs; running stitch. Cross stitch. Double back stitch, back stitch buttonhole. Cotton threads in yellow, green, white, red maroon.
