Summary

Giant-sized anglepoise light with powder-coated aluminium frame and cotton shade. Circular powder-coated aluminium base covers internal steel base structure stabilised by 6 lead weights, attached by allen bolts. Vertical rim to vase cover, slanting upwards towards centre. Electrical flex runs through base to dimmer switch and plug. Main armature slots into recess in centre of vase cover, consisting of 1 vertical and 1 horizontal tubular aluminium length hinged at base, centre and light fitting. A narrower tube runs parallel to main arms, attached with 2 springs to create tension. Pleated cream cotton lampshade with internal frosted glass diffuser attached, and perspex dust-cover which sits on top of shade. Light can swivel 360 degrees on armature, and angle can be adjusted at hinged points. See manufacturer's instructions in file for installation and recommended display positions. See Decorative Arts Bisley cupboard 5 for tools (allen key, spanner and flange tool to adjust angles).

Superarchimoon light Designed by Philippe Starck 1999 Manufactured by Flos, Milan Cast and spun aluminium, glass, cotton light shade The sleek, super sized Superarchimoon light can be adjusted to suit different room heights, using the principle of an Anglepoise desk lamp. The scaling up of such a familiar office accessory, with the unexpected addition of a pretty pleated shade is an ironic take on the traditional standard lamp. Starck has worked on a huge range of projects from luxury hotel developments to wristwatches and his designs are distinctive and always surprising. He is best known for the stylish Juicy Salif lemon squeezer and the transparent polycarbonate Louis Ghost chair. Purchased by the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme on behalf of Manchester City Galleries with funds from the Arts Council Lottery, the Corporate Patrons of Manchester City Galleries and the Crafts Council, 2005.
