pocket

Summary

Patchwork front of coarse and fine linen, embroidered in lattice and floral patterns in yellow, red and green silks, cotton in ribbed, diaper and broken striped weaves, linen back and lining. Widening to base, front in eleven sections, with embroidered sections towards centre of pocket, bound at top with tape which forms strings to tie round waist. Vertical slit at centre front, slit and edges bound with printed cotton, with puce stripes patterned with flowers in red, pink and green, alternating with stripe of yellow sprigged background and floral sprays in blue, green, yellow, red and black. Embroidered pieces probably from an earlier textile, perhaps a bed or cot cover from about 1750, whilst the printed cotton around the edges dates from the 1780s.
