Summary

Public: Mug, white earthenware, printed in blue with figures of Lord Combermere and the Duke of Wellington on horseback, beneath pearlware glaze. Private: Cylindrical mug with recessed base and plain loop handle. Body transfer-printed in underglaze blue with pale blue ground reserving two oval scrollwork cartouches on either side, flanking central trophy of cannon, spears, halberds, flags and drum inscribed 'GR'. Cartouche to left of handle contains figure of the Duke of Wellington on horseback with his sword drawn, against landscape background, with curling scroll to left inscribed 'THE DUKE OF / WELLINGTON'. Cartouche to right of handle contains similar figure on horseback against landscape setting with walled hill fort to left, with curling scroll to right inscribed 'LORD / COMBERMERE'. Inside rim printed with double tongue-and-groove border, handle with floral sprays against pale blue ground.
