Summary

Public: Ovoid jug, white earthenware with a pearlware glaze, transfer-printed in overglaze red with scenes of 'The Farmer's Arms' on one side, commemorative verse on the other and grapevine border to neck, picked out in red, green, pink and yellow overglaze enamels. Private: Ovoid jug on everted foot with cylindrical neck, inset lip and ribbed loop handle. Transfer-printed overglaze on side to left of handle with The Farmer's Arms, comprising elaborate scroll inscribed 'TRUST IN GOD / THE / HUSBANDMANS / DILIGENCE / PROVIDES / BREAD', surmounted by scattered farming equipment flanked by farmer carrying spade and pickaxe to left, farmer's wife churning butter to right. Side to right of handle printed with cartouche of farming equipment and two scrolls inscribed 'IN GOD / IS ALL / OUR / TRUST' and 'INDUSTRY PRODUCETH WEALTH'. Cartouche contains verse: 'Let the wealthy and great / Roll in fplender and ftate / I envy them not I declare it / I eat my own lamb / My own chickens and ham / I fhear my own fleece and I wear it / I have lawns I have bowers / I have fruits I have flowers / The lark is my morning alarmer / So jolly boys now / Here's God speed the Plough / Long life and fuccefs to the farmer'. Neck printed with fruiting grapevine enclosed within two beaded borders. Prints picked out in red, green, pink and yellow enamels, with red enamel bands to lip, neckrim and base of neck, handle picked out with row of red enamel dots. Finely crazed pearlware glaze.
