Summary
Woman's single shoe covered in white silk damask, figured in a blue floral design (silk dated at 1715-20 by V&A - Clare Browne). Sole of brown leather in 2 pieces with separate cover to heel; heel covered in white kid leather; 'Louis heel' - sole very curved in the early 18th century style; very pointed toe with leather cap attached with contemporary pin. Ties over instep with vandyked toungue. Shoe lined tabby woven linen. Sole of heel written in ink 'Mrs Cromwell Shoe 1649'. From the estate of the late Miss Faith Eaton, the Queen's doll restorer, and includes a note saying that it had belonged to Mrs Richard Cromwell, Oliver Cromwell's Daughter-in-law. Conserved at the Textile Conservation Centre at WInchester in 2007 (see report).
