Summary

Tall pear shaped coffee pot, with short curved spout high up on body, and slightly angled plain loop handle. Domed cover with central button finial. Ivory coloured body, decorated with an overglaze pattern of vertical stripes, each stripe comprising a gilt strip and a metallic silver lustre strip side by side. Gilt rims to neck and spout. Cover decorated with gilt and silver stripes radiating out from plain finial, gilt edge to rim. Cylindrical coffee can, with loop handle slight spurred at the top. Can sides decorated with vertical gilt and silver stripes, foot and neck rim edged in gilt. Saucer with angled sloping sides and wide, recessed well outlined with two gilt bands. Sides decorated with gilt and silver stripes radiating outward from well towards gilt edged rim. Pattern range Pareek (Johnson Bros range), reference code A961.

Gallery text panel The Industrial Art Collection In the early 1930s Manchester Art Gallery decided to form a collection of modern design. The Industrial Art Collection was intended to show how artistic qualities could be found in the most humble of everyday objects, from kitchen tableware to bedroom curtains. The collection enabled the Gallery to take part in a growing debate on standards in British design. It was an opportunity to encourage manufacturers to improve the quality of their products, and to show Gallery visitors that good design could and should be available to everyone. With this in mind, curator Lawrence Haward visited trade fairs and department stores, acquiring textiles, ceramics, glass and furniture. His choices are typical of 1930s 'good taste' and many have since become design classics.
