Frances Rix about 1736 attributed to William Hoare 1707 – 92 oil on canvas When this portrait was painted, Frances was about 13 and lived at Goswald Hall, near Eye, in Suffolk. The painter, William Hoare, was also from Eye. He spent nine years in Europe, studying his profession, and on his return painted this portrait, probably on a visit back to Suffolk to see his family. He settled in Bath, where his portrait business thrived. Frances’ delicately painted hands and mouth, making her soft and maidenly, but slightly self-conscious, show why Hoare was such a popular choice for portraits. Bernard William Blakely bequest 1950.62
