Summary

Black cloth, lined black twilled cotton to waist; sleeves lined white linen; skirt lined white twilled wool front each in one section to waist, fastening with six buttons (missing) to high v-neck with revers and turn-down velvet collar; slit pocket (black twilled cotton) inside left front; back in four shaped sections to waist, loop for hanging at neck, two centre back sections extending to form centre back skirt, open below waist with overlap; skirt in one section each side extending to side back; pleating at side back seams, button (missing) at top of pleating, shape like pocket flap with two buttons (missing) inserted in pleating just below waist; pocket, black twilled cotton, at waist; slit pocket, black twilled cotton, at waist; slit pocket, black twilled cotton, in waist seam to right of centre front; long sleeves in two sections, outer wrist open and fastening with two buttons (missing); woven label inside back of neck "Hyam & Co. Ltd. New Street BIRMINGHAM". Worn by Mr John William Mathews (1846-1898, Meole Grange, nr.Shrewsbury), a coachman and grandfather of donor.
