Black straw and felt, brim binding and band black corded silk ribbon, straight-sided crown, straw, soft top, felt brim turned up at sides, crown lined leather at base. Worn by William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98) Prime Minister and donor's father-in-law. See also photograph published by James Valentine, Dundee, c 1895.
