Map of Manchester and Salford in 1831

Map of Manchester and Salford in 1831

Summary

This enormous plan of Manchester and Salford is known for its accuracy. It is notable for its acknowledgment of the existence of industrial sites, often referenced yet rarely depicted in other maps of the time. The enormous iconic cotton spinning mills of the early industrial revolution can be found on this map, including the McConnel and Kennedy mills, those of A. & G. Murray, and Richard Arkwright's pioneering mill (shown as 'Norris & Hodges's Cotton Mill' near to the Shudehill area). In 1831, when this map was published, Ancoats was the centre of cotton manufacturing in Manchester. In this part of the city, some areas of workers' housing that were still in the planning are depicted, showing how developers intended quickly-built accommodation to materialise around the mills.
