Summary
Public: Ovoid jug with cylindrical neck and acanthus-moulded lip, buff earthenware, transfer-printed in overglaze black with country house and dated coaching scene, picked out in red, blue, yellow, black and brown overglaze enamels and metallic purple lustre. Private: Ovoid jug with cylindrical neck, inset acanthus-moulded lip and ribbed strap loop handle with slight spur at thumbrest. Side to right of handle printed in overglaze black with country house and landscaped garden, two figures and a dog in foreground to right. Side to left of handle printed with a coach and four heavy with passengers, coach inscribed 'THE / ROYAL / PILOT' at the back, with destinations on the sides including 'Leicester', 'Liverpool', 'London', 'Carlisle' and 'Northampton'. Small scrolls either side of main carriage window inscribed with company name, partly illegible '... / & Co'. Coach picked out in red, yellow, blue, black and ground overglaze enamels. Both prints slightly distorted from bat-printed process. Side beneath lip inscribed in metallic purple lustre 'J W / 1815' beneath two leafy sprigs, with narrow purple lustre bands to neck, lip, foot and handle thumbrest, heavier band to neckrim. Finely crazed glaze.
