Summary

A full-length figure of a young man in seventeenth century dress, seated in a carved wooden chair dated 1669, at a circular wooden table to left. He sits resting his head despondently on one arm and gazing upward, several blank sheets, a quill and ink bottle, piles of books and a drinking flask on the table before him. He sits in a domestic interior setting with a floral screen in the background to the left, and crumpled sheets of paper lying on the patterned carpet beneath his feet.
