Canadian Pacific to Canada and USA
Kenneth Denton Shoesmith 1890 - 1939
Summary
A proof before letters of a poster commissioned by Canadian Pacific Steamships to promote the Empress of Britain, the largest and most luxurious Canadian Pacific ocean liner. It was built in Scotland between 1928 and 1931 and was owned by the Canadian Pacific Company, once known as the world's greatest travel system. Established in 1881 as the Canadian Pacific Railway it evolved into a business empire to include an airline and ocean liners. The company played an important role in the colonialisation of Canada, taking new settlers from Britain and elsewhere. The Empress of Britain provided a trans-Atlantic passenger service from spring to autumn between Canada and Europe from 1931 to 1939. It was sunk by a German U boat on 28 October 1940 during war service.
