Cockle Pickers' sugar bowl
Summary
White bone china sugar bowl with a blue transfer printed designs. Around the external rim, the border referencse a traditional Staffordshire floral border used in the Willow Pattern tea services, interrupted with images of African slaves packed into the hold of a slaving ship. This image was used in Thomas Clarkson's book, History of the Abolition of the Slave Trade. The interior of the bowl bears the image of a kneeling slave in chains, adapted from a print on an 1830 drabware cup and saucer.
