Street in Pendlebury

Laurence Stephen Lowry 1887 - 1976

Summary

Street scene in Pendelbury, Manchester, with flat, plain coloured houses on either side. A factory with a smoking chimney can be seen in the background, and in the foreground, men, women, children and dogs walk the street. A child stands in the doorway of a house to the left of the painting. This is an everyday scene of war-time Britain, industrial and smog-ridden. The sky is pale and neutral in colour and the houses are light grey, red and yellow. There are two telegraph poles to the right of the painting, which are regularly featured in Lowry's street scenes.
