Jardin de Luxembourg, Paris
Jose Christopherson 1921 - 1996
Summary
Oil painting of the Jardin de Luxembourg, the largest public park in Paris. It is located in the 6th arrondissement (administrative district) and is the garden of the French Senate. The painiting depicts one of the garden's terraces, from which the Pantheon (building) can be seen. In the foreground, the Medici fountain is at the centre of the painting, around which chairs have been placed. A palm tree stands to the far right of the fountain and one of the garden's many statues, to the left of the viewer. There are stone walls surround the terrace. The majority of the painting comprises of linear detail making the painting appear highly graphic in style. The paintwork is patchy in parts, and so it appears to have been erased or covered over with layers of paint. There is much texture to the surface as the paint is applied in washes, in block colour as well as in broad brush strokes.
