Summary

Depiction of the Plazza Del Popolo (The People's Square), looking west from the Pincio (hill of Rome). Designed by architect Giuseppe Valadier at the beginning of the 19th century, the plaza is a large square and is considered one of the best urban works in Rome. The Egyptian obelisk of Ramesses II can be seen in the centre of the square and the church of Santa Maria del Popolo is in the north-east corner. In the foreground, tall trees and the figures of people can be seen walking, with the city of Rome beyond in the background. The painting is highly detailed and naturalistic colours are used.
