Portrait of Ezra Pound - Poet Seated
Summary
One of a series of figure studies Lewis created after the war between 1919 and 1922. Dissatified with his wartime drawings, Lewis changed his technique and developed a new linear style that reflected the influence of contemporary Continental styles. Lewis depicts Pound's face as mask-like and expressionless (like Portrait of the Artist). This contrasts with the sweeping curves that make up the seated poet so that Pound appears as a study of barely suppressed energy. Lewis first met the expatriate American poet Ezra Pound in 1909 and together they published the first issue of 'Blast', a magazine promoting the Vorticist manifesto, in 1914.
