party dress in printed cotton organdie with vertical bands of geometric printing on skirt and body of bodice; and vertical green and black printing round neck, waist, cuffs and hem. Square neck; long sleeves with deep double-presstud cuffs; bust darts; calf length skirt; cb zip and placket to waist; bodice lined cream acetate; woven label cb neck "Jean Varon, made in England, hand wash". John Bates began designing under the name Jean Varon in 1959 and by the mid 60s was one of the most influential fashion designers in London. He was chosen for Bath's Dress of the Year in 1965 and designed Diana Rigg's wardrobe as Emma Peel in the Avengers. He continued with Jean Varon until 1980.
